Yes. Tradescantia zebrina is listed as toxic to cats, dogs and horses, with contact dermatitis the most common reaction5. The irritant sap causes red, itchy skin around the muzzle, paws and belly in animals that push through or lie on the foliage. Eating the leaves may cause mild vomiting or digestive upset, though serious poisoning is uncommon. Some gardeners also react to the sap on bare skin, so gloves are sensible when pruning. This doesn’t rule the plant out of a family garden – it simply means thinking about placement. Hanging displays, raised planters and enclosed beds keep the foliage away from pets while still showing it off. If your plant has already gone soft and green, withhold fertiliser for a full season and increase light.
